Aussies’ Tougher Geckos

Tropical Geckos Reveal Remarkable Seasonal Adaptations in Australian Savannas

Life on Earth is incredibly diverse, with creatures of all sizes adapting to a vast array of environments. Many animals possess the remarkable ability to alter their internal workings, their physiology, in response to environmental shifts. We see this in the familiar example of bears entering a state of hibernation during the colder winter months.

While the tropics are often envisioned as perpetually warm and verdant paradises, a closer look reveals a more complex picture. The consistent temperatures often found in tropical rainforests mean that some animals there may indeed have limited physiological adjustments to seasonal changes. However, a substantial portion of the tropics comprises savannas, characterised by distinct and often dramatic wet and dry seasons. For the wildlife inhabiting these regions, water availability is as crucial as temperature in shaping their physiological makeup.

Recent research has shed new light on the adaptive capabilities of animals in these challenging environments. A study focusing on geckos from Australia’s seasonal tropics has unveiled surprising physiological adjustments that challenge long-held views on reptile seasonal acclimatisation.

Unlocking the Secrets of Water Conservation in Geckos

Reptiles, with their characteristic scaly skin and ability to thrive in arid landscapes, are often perceived as being largely unaffected by fluctuations in rainfall. Geckos, a common group of nocturnal lizards, are particularly prevalent across tropical regions worldwide. In this study, scientists meticulously measured water loss across different seasons in closely related gecko species belonging to the genus Gehyra. These agile climbers are typically found dwelling in trees or on rocky outcrops.

In lizards, a significant majority of water loss – approximately 70% – occurs through the skin. Additional water is also lost through respiration and evaporation from the eyes. Researchers anticipated finding variations in water loss rates among different gecko species, influenced by their specific habitats and evolutionary relationships.

However, the most striking finding was the remarkable ability of these geckos to actively alter their water loss rates in response to the changing seasons. During the dry season, water loss was found to be reduced by an impressive margin, in some cases up to a staggering 76% compared to the wetter months.

While it’s evident that geckos must conserve water during the dry season, a pertinent question arises: why not maintain these low water loss rates year-round? The researchers hypothesise that there might be an energetic cost associated with continuously minimising water loss. This could be linked to an increased reliance on specific molecules that regulate water permeability across the skin, a vital function for all terrestrial animals. When water is plentiful during the wet season, these regulatory mechanisms might be relaxed, allowing for a higher rate of water loss.

It is highly probable that geckos adjust their water conservation strategies in direct correlation with ambient humidity levels. Yet, the seasonal rainfall patterns in tropical savannas trigger a cascade of other significant environmental changes.

Beyond Water: Navigating Food Scarcity and Energy Conservation

The dry season in tropical savannas brings about a noticeable decline in the availability of insect prey. This reduction in food resources necessitates further adaptations for animals to survive. Previous investigations into amphibians and reptiles in these regions have documented strategies such as reduced activity levels, lowered body temperatures, and slowed metabolic rates – a phenomenon known as “metabolic depression” – as a means of conserving energy. The current study adds a crucial new dimension to this understanding, highlighting changes in skin permeability as another vital seasonal adaptation that enables geckos to endure the rigours of extended dry periods.

Anticipating Stress: Proactive Physiological Shifts

Intriguingly, the geckos begin to implement these physiological adjustments well in advance of the onset of the dry season, which typically spans from May to October in their Australian habitat. The observed shift towards reduced water loss in the studied geckos occurred in May, even though some rainfall was still present early in the month. This suggests a remarkable capacity for anticipation; the geckos are proactively preparing for the physiological challenges ahead, rather than simply reacting to them.

Furthermore, evidence indicates that these animals are not merely responding to general seasonal cues like the angle of the sun or changes in day length. For instance, monitor lizards inhabiting the savanna exhibit behavioural changes early in the dry season. However, individuals of the same species residing near the floodplain of the South Alligator River delay their seasonal adjustments until the floodplain begins to dry later in the season. Conversely, monitor lizards living in close proximity to permanent water sources appear to forgo these seasonal changes altogether.

While the precise mechanisms by which proximity to water influences water loss in geckos remain to be fully elucidated, the behaviour of other species strongly suggests that early changes in humidity, or perhaps shifts in food availability, serve as key triggers for these anticipatory adaptations.

Resilience in a Challenging World: A Tapestry of Adaptations

Far from being physiologically rigid, the animals of the seasonal tropics have evolved a diverse array of adaptations to cope with the demanding conditions they face each dry season. Some of these adaptations are truly unique, such as the underwater nesting behaviour observed in the northern long-necked turtle. Others, like metabolic depression, represent variations on strategies employed by animals in different parts of the world. And still others, such as the geckos’ remarkable ability to modulate their water loss, may simply be more readily observable due to the animals’ above-ground presence, unlike their hibernating counterparts in inaccessible terrestrial environments.

The global phenomenon of climate change extends beyond mere temperature increases. It also encompasses alterations in rainfall patterns and significant declines in insect populations. A future with diminished food availability could have dire consequences for the animals of the seasonal tropics. However, the evolutionary history of these species, shaped by life in variable seasonal conditions, suggests a degree of inherent resilience, equipping them to withstand at least some less catastrophic environmental shifts.
