NDDC Boosts NYSC Communication Capabilities with Broadcast Equipment Donation
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has significantly enhanced the communication infrastructure of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) through a substantial donation of broadcast equipment. This strategic intervention aims to bolster the NYSC’s ability to communicate effectively, thereby strengthening its role in youth development and national integration across Nigeria.
During a presentation ceremony at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, articulated the commission’s vision behind the donation. He emphasized that supporting the NYSC is akin to empowering the nation, given the scheme’s crucial role in bringing together young individuals from diverse backgrounds. “Communication is very important, and we must ensure that it is done effectively,” Dr. Ogbuku stated. “The NDDC recognises communication as a vital tool for national growth and development.”
The donation is specifically designed to upgrade the NYSC’s radio station, providing it with the necessary tools to better engage with corps members and disseminate information about its activities and impact to the broader public. Dr. Ogbuku further elaborated on the NDDC’s commitment to identifying and addressing institutional gaps that hinder national development, noting that the commission steps in with targeted support after thorough assessments to strengthen institutions and improve service delivery.
The comprehensive intervention package includes:
- Uninterrupted Power Supply: A complete inverter system equipped with a lithium battery, ensuring continuous operation of the broadcast equipment.
- High-Quality Transmission: A 2-kilowatt, energy-efficient radio transmitter manufactured in Italy, which adheres to the regulations set by the National Broadcasting Commission.
- Studio Enhancements: A full renovation of the station’s wiring system in both recording and live studios. This critical upgrade is intended to eliminate audio noise and significantly improve sound quality, leading to more professional broadcasts.
Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of the NYSC, who was represented by Mr. Emeka Mgbemena, Director of Media, expressed profound gratitude for the timely donation. He highlighted the positive impact the equipment will have on the NYSC radio station’s operations and its capacity to provide robust broadcasting training for corps members. The NYSC radio station, operational for over four years, has already proven to be a valuable training ground, with more than 12 corps members trained there in the past three years securing employment in media organizations. Gen. Nafiu assured that the new equipment would be utilized efficiently to guarantee uninterrupted transmissions and elevate service delivery.
NDDC Extends Flood Relief to Ogu-Bollo Community
In a parallel initiative demonstrating its commitment to vulnerable communities, the NDDC has also distributed essential relief materials to the Ogu-Bollo community in Rivers State. This area was severely impacted by recent floods that resulted in widespread destruction of homes and farmlands, causing significant hardship for its residents.
Jeremiah Onolejoloni, Director II of Education, Health, and Social Services, presented the relief items on behalf of Dr. Ogbuku. He reiterated the commission’s dedication to the well-being of those affected, stating that the gesture was aimed at alleviating the difficulties faced by the community.
Dr. Ogbuku explained that the NDDC recognized the widespread economic challenges many individuals are currently experiencing. To address these immediate needs, the commission provided financial support to the Derek and Davia Foundation, a non-governmental organization, enabling them to procure and distribute crucial food items and household materials to the people of Ogu-Bollo Kingdom.
The distribution of these palliatives serves as a tangible reaffirmation of the government’s presence, compassion, and solidarity with families enduring hardship. “This event is not just about the distribution of palliatives; it is another way to reaffirm government presence, compassion, and solidarity with families experiencing economic hardship and the belief in the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President,” Dr. Ogbuku remarked.
He urged the Ogu-Bollo community to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of the provided items. Furthermore, he encouraged them to embrace peace and actively support government initiatives and development programs aimed at fostering progress within the region.
The paramount ruler of Ogu-Bollo, Chief Joachim Amachiri, lauded the NDDC’s intervention, emphasizing its critical role in aiding the community’s recovery from the devastating flood. Dr. George Smile, representing the program consultant, also commended the NDDC’s efforts and revealed that plans are in motion with development partners to extend similar support to neighboring communities, underscoring a broader regional commitment to disaster relief and community resilience.
